Losses from Circumcision

“Many people think circumcision removes nothing more than a little extra skin. However, circumcision removes several critical components of male sexual anatomy. This list enumerates everything currently known to be physically lost after circumcision.

Alongside these physical losses, it is important to remember that whenever a child is circumcised, by far the greatest loss is his choice to make decisions about his own body and his own sex life when he becomes an adult.”

Effects of male circumcision on female arousal and orgasm

“While vaginal dryness is considered an indicator for female sexual arousal disorder,1,2 male circumcision may exacerbate female vaginal dryness during intercourse.3 O’Hara and O’Hara reported that women who had experienced coitus with both intact and circumcised men preferred intact partners by a ratio of 8.6 to one.4 Most women (85.5%) in that survey reported that they were more likely to experience orgasm with a genitally intact partner: ‘They [surveyed women] were also more likely to report that vaginal secretions lessened as coitus progressed with their circumcised partners (16.75, 6.88–40.77).’4

Presence of the movable foreskin makes a difference in foreplay, being more arousing to the female.4 Women reported they were about twice as likely to experience orgasm if the male partner had a foreskin.4 The impact of male circumcision on vaginal dryness during coitus required further investigation.”

San Francisco's attempt to outlaw circumcision of minors and how it advances the cause of respecting the bodies of all children

“Those who say banning male circumcision crosses a line that banning female circumcision does not, need to confront their bias. If removing a foreskin without consent is ok, why isn't it ok to remove portions of a girl's clitoral hood without consent or even in the case of older girls with consent?”

Surveying the Benefits of the Intact Penis

“There are an increasing number of American parents who are saying “no” to routine circumcision. This positive choice gives boys increased health and lifetime benefits. While the circumcision rates continue to decline in the United States, those who choose “foreskin-friendly” parenting find themselves in contrast of the greater circumcising culture. This can cause increased uncertainty about decisions of circumcision. Because of the cultural myths relating to circumcision, even physicians can provide inaccurate and misleading information on the importance of the foreskin, its health benefits and vital roles to optimum sexual function, and proper hygiene and care for intact boys and men.”

A man’s stolen pleasure

“The foreskin. Who would've thought that such a small piece of skin would be surrounded by such fervent debate? "To cut or not to cut?" seems to be the soul-searching question for many expectant parents when they find out they're having a baby boy. But is it really a decision for parents to make, or is circumcision at birth or during childhood akin to genital mutilation, as some groups claim?”

Nurses speak out against circumcision

The following article was written several years ago, but the issues raised are still valid.

“The title of this article was not taken from some political piece reprinted from The Washington Post. Nor was it borrowed from the official U.N. list of countries that are still committing human rights violations brutal enough to make you sick.

Rather, the title for this article comes straight from the heart of one person, me, who has the audacity to speak out in behalf of untold millions of baby boys who have been mutilated in our own country. What's worse, the basic human rights of baby boys are still being violated every day in the United States.”

Circumcised and hated it

For anyone who erroneously thinks that every circumcised man is happy that he was robbed of his foreskin as an infant, here is something to disprove that notion.

South Miami Hospital Wants Silence About Circumcision Mistake

“Florida victims of medical malpractice and their attorneys have a recognized constitutional First Amendment right of free speech and expression. Currently, our Miami medical malpractice law office represents Mario Viera, an infant circumcised at South Miami Hospital without his parent's consent. The case garnered international media attention and the family hopes that it will lead to the enactment of a law regulating how circumcisions are performed not only in Florida but the rest of the country.”

The Unkindest Cut?

Circumcision Trauma

CIRCUMCISION - INFANT & CHILD DEATHS

Deaths from Circumcision

Many deaths due to circumcision go unknown because the cause of death is classified as something else. Thus, it is estimated that the actual number of fatalities as a result of this elective, cosmetic procedure is much higher than the current numbers on record.

More circumcised men are HIV positive

MBABANE – Even though male circumcision is considered to have a protective effect for HIV infection, circumcised men have a slightly higher HIV infection than those who are not.

The Times SUNDAY can today reveal that government has known this for close to three years.

It is contained in the Swaziland Demographic and Health Survey (SDHS) of 2007 which still prevails.

This report summarises findings of the 2006 survey carried out by the Swaziland Central Statistical Office (SCO).”

What were the real reasons behind David Reimer's suicide?

“David Reimer was one of the most famous patients in the annals of medicine. Born in 1965 in Winnipeg, he was 8 months old when a doctor used an electrocautery needle, instead of a scalpel, to excise his foreskin during a routine circumcision, burning off his entire penis as a result.”

The psychological impact of circumcision

Conclusion:

“There is strong evidence that circumcision is overwhelmingly painful and traumatic. Behavioural changes in circumcised infants have been observed 6 months after the circumcision. The physical and sexual loss resulting from circumcision is gaining recognition, and some men have strong feelings of dissatisfaction about being circumcised.

The potential negative impact of circumcision on the mother-child relationship is evident from some mothers’ distressed responses and from the infants’ behavioural changes. The disrupted mother-infant bond has far-reaching developmental implications [99-104] and may be one of the most adverse impacts of circumcision.

Long-term psychological effects associated with circumcision can be difficult to establish because the consequences of early trauma are only rarely, and under special circumstances, recognizable to the person who experienced the trauma. However, lack of awareness does not necessarily mean that there has been no impact on thinking, feeling, attitude, behaviour and functioning, which are often closely connected. In this way, an early trauma can alter a whole life, whether or not the trauma is consciously remembered.

Defending circumcision requires minimizing or dismissing the harm and producing overstated medical claims about protection from future harm. The ongoing denial requires the acceptance of false beliefs and misunderstandings of facts. These psychological factors affect professionals, members of religious groups and parents involved in the practice. Cultural conformity is a major force perpetuating non-religious circumcision, and to a greater degree, religious circumcision. The avoidance of guilt and the reluctance to acknowledge the mistake and all that that implies help to explain the tenacity with which the practice is defended.

Whatever affects us psychologically also affects us socially. If a trauma is acted out on the next generation, it can alter countless generations until it is recognized and stopped. The potential social consequences of circumcision are profound [21]. There has been no study of these issues perhaps because they are too disturbing to those in societies that do circumcise and of little interest in societies that do not. Close psychological and social examination could threaten personal, cultural and religious beliefs of circumcising societies. Consequently, circumcision has become a political issue in which the feelings of infants are unappreciated and secondary to the feelings of adults, who are emotionally invested in the practice.

Awareness about circumcision is changing, and investigation of the psychological and social effects of circumcision opens a valuable new area of inquiry. Researchers are encouraged to include circumcision status as part of the data to be collected for other studies and to explore a range of potential research topics [21]. Examples of unexplored areas include testing male infants, older children and adults for changes in feelings attitudes and behaviours (especially antisocial behaviour); physiological, neurological and neurochemical differences; and sexual and emotional functioning.”

Female Circumcision. Male Circumcision. Is There A Difference?

"In looking at both Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Male Genital Mutilation (MGM), it appears that there is no equal protection under the law for male infants and boys under the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Illegal to perform FGM, fine to perform MGM. Yes, willful destruction of the primary male sex organ is unethical. Or is it much more than unethical?" -Ken Derifield of The Intact Network

Male genital mutilation: Beyond the tolerable?

“My aim in this article has been to highlight, detail and explain an analytical and normative inconsistency in [the] belief that FGM is intolerable on the grounds that it diminishes capabilities such as bodily integrity through inflicting sexual, physiological and psychological harm and is perpetuated by coercive social forces, while regarding MGM as benign.  By examining the history of MGM and drawing on empirical studies of its effects on sexual, physiological and psychological functioning, I have sought to show that there is good reason to recognize qualitative, though in the majority of cases not quantitative, similarities between MGM and FGM.”

America: Land of the Mutilated Penis

“If you really think about it, it might be possible to recall the first time somebody explained to you what a male circumcision is. I don't think we ever get over the shock of that knowledge, and those of us who were put through this torturous act certainly never really heal from it, instead we pay for our parent's decision for the rest of our lives.

Strong words are required to describe the huge mistake we continue to commit in this society by having boys circumcised. It is far too large of a problem in America.”

Circumcision's complications: what could go wrong?

‎"Tissue removed in a circumcision cannot truly be replaced or re-grown. However, there are so many complications from infant circumcision that there is a flourishing sub-specialty of pediatric urologists who treat children with severe circumcision-induced complications.

Dr. David Gibbons is one such pediatric urologist serving the Washington, DC area. He has seen so many bad results from circumcision in his practice that he wishes the procedure would fall out of favor."

Quote from Dr. Gibbons: "Neonatal circumcision [sic] is totally unnecessary, and there is no current role for preventative or prophylactic neonatal circumcision."

Circumcision: A Source of Jewish Pain

“Currently, circumcision is not universal among Jews either inside or outside the United States. The Circumcision Resource Center, a nonprofit educational organization, knows of hundreds of Jews in Europe, South America, and in the United States who either have not or would not circumcise a son. Even in Israel some Jews do not circumcise, and there is an organization that publicly opposes circumcision.3 The purpose of this article is to coherently explain a few of the contemporary reasons for the increasing doubts some Jews have about circumcision. Then I will apply Torah law and Jewish values to these reasons.”

Neonatal Cortisol Response to Circumcision with Anesthesia

“Eleven male newborns were circumcised with a local dorsal penile nerve block, and 13 controls were circumcised without anesthetic. Matched pairs of pre- and postcircumcision cortisol levels in the two groups were compared. The adrenal cortisol response to surgery was not significantly reduced by the administration of lidocaine. Blood sampling and anesthetic injection of venipuncture alone did not evoke the adrenal response in uncircumcised control infants. Cortical input or secondary epinephrine elevation may be producing the cortisol elevation in infants despite regional blockage of the afferent nerve pathways.”

Atlanta Lawyer Takes on Botched Circumcision Claims Nationwide

“Although the $10.7 million default judgment David J. Llewellyn of Johnson & Ward just scored may be tough to collect, the case is a dramatic statement about the Atlanta attorney's development of an unusual national practice: suing over botched circumcisions.

In the latest case, Llewellyn brought a suit on behalf of a boy and his parents against Mogen Circumcision Instruments, claiming one of its devices severed the head of the boy's penis during a bris, a Jewish ceremony for a male infant. The company failed to answer the suit, and Senior U.S. District Court Judge Jack B. Weinstein of the Eastern District of New York ruled the company owed the eight-figured sum.

"He's the expert in this field," said Llewellyn's New York co-counsel on the Mogen case, John L. Juliano, a personal injury and medical malpractice attorney in East Northport, NY. "I don't know many other people who handle these cases."

Llewellyn said he has sued doctors, hospitals and medical supply makers around the country for circumcision-related malpractice and personal injury during the past 15 years. He has won, lost and settled in the area, which he estimated is about half of his practice, with the other half a broader range of personal injury and malpractice litigation.”

Study: Adult Circumcision Minimally Effective at Controlling U.S. HIV Transmission

“Circumcision would not significantly reduce the spread of HIV in the United States, a new study suggests.

The study, carried out in San Francisco, indicated that circumcision as a tactic for reducing HIV transmission would only be minimally effective, reported an article posted at Scientific Computing.

Although studies in Africa have indicated that circumcision might help reduce the spread of HIV in straight men by removing foreskin cells that are vulnerable to the virus, the new study--which focuses on gay American men--does not arrive at the same conclusion, in part because circumcision is already so prevalent in the U.S. Moreover, only a very small minority of men surveyed for the study said that they would undergo circumcision even if it were proven to reduce their risk of contracting HIV.”

The Ethics of Neonatal Circumcision

Blog article about the subject of infant circumcision. An excerpt:

“The last couple months have seen a flurry of reports in the media (particularly American media) regarding male circumcision and its potential health benefits. However, most of the coverage in the U.S. of male circumcision fails to discuss what I think is the most important issue, the ethics.

Before continuing, though, it is critical to discriminate between the significantly different situations under which circumcision may occur. These include therapeutic and non-therapeutic circumcisions performed on either consenting or non-consenting individuals. A therapeutic circumcision is one which is performed to treat a disease or disorder; a non-therapeutic circumcisions are those done for any other reason. Unless noted otherwise, I am only focusing on non-therapeutic, non-consensual circumcision since it’s the kind most often practiced, particularly in the United States where in my opinion the circumcision debates seem to leave out the most important question, is neonatal circumcision ethical?”

Reasons Not to Circumcise Your Baby

“Circumcision rates in America are dropping as more parents and doctors learn of the physical consequences of male genital mutilation (MGM).

Famously promoted by Dr. Kellogg (of cereal fame) as a masturbation preventive, routine infant circumcision (RIC) is still widely practiced in the USA despite its lack of recommendation by any national medical organization. Circumcision is the subject of a number of widespread myths and misconceptions, including the false “uncircumcised penises are hard to clean” myth. Less well-known are the reasons against circumcising.”

Male Circumcision in the USA: A Human Rights Primer

From the writing:
"Despite the obviously irrational cruelty of circumcision, the profit incentive in American medical practice is unlikely to allow science or human rights principles to interrupt the highly lucrative American circumcision industry. It is now time for European medical associations loudly to condemn the North American medical community for participating in and profiting from what is by any standard a senseless and barbaric sexual mutilation of innocent children."
--Fleiss PM. MD, MPH. Circumcision. Lancet 1995;345:927 [1]

"Custom will reconcile people to any atrocity."
--George Bernard Shaw

"What is done to children, they will do to society."
--Karl Menninger, MD

INTRODUCTION
The American medical establishment has promoted male circumcision as a preventative measure for an astonishing array of pathologies, ranging from masturbatory insanity, moral laxity, aesthetics and hygiene, to headache, tuberculosis, rheumatism, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, paralysis, alcoholism, near-sightedness, rectal prolapse, hernia, gout, clubfoot, urinary tract infections, phimosis, cancer of the penis, cancer of the cervix, syphillis and AIDS. [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7] But the only rationale which has clear, well established scientific support is the one originally and openly used by the medical establishment when medical circumcision was introduced as a "public health" measure in the Victorian era. That is, to punish and control the sexuality of male children. Victorian doctors knew something that modern medicine has chosen to ignore: the foreskin is at the heart of male sexuality.
A typical western medical circumcision results in the loss of approximately 1/2 of the total surface area of the penis and between 50 and 80% or more of its erogenous sexual nerves, [8, 9, 10] including:
  • The Taylor "ridged band" [sometimes called the "frenar band"], the primary erogenous zone of the male body. This unique, highly specialized and exquisitely sensitive structure is equipped with soft ridges designed by nature to stimulate the female's inner labia and G-spot during intercourse.
  • The frenulum, the highly erogenous V-shaped tethering structure on the underside of the head of the penis.
  • Between 10,000 and 20,000 specialized erotogenic nerve endings of several types, which can feel slight variations in pressure and stretching, subtle changes in temperature, and fine gradations in texture.
  • Thousands of coiled fine-touch receptors called Meissner's corpuscles, which are also found in the fingertips.
Also lost are:
  • The foreskin's gliding action, the non-abrasive gliding of the shaft of the penis within its own sheath, which facilitates smooth, comfortable and pleasurable intercourse for both partners.
  • The "subpreputual wetness" which protects the mucosa of the glans (and inner foreskin), and which contains immunoglobulin antibodies and antibacterial and antiviral proteins such as the pathogen-killing enzyme lysozyme, a potent HIV killer which is also found in tears and mothers' milk.
  • Estrogen receptors, the purpose of which is not fully understood.
  • The foreskin's apocrine glands, which produce pheromones.
  • The protection and lubrication of the erogenous surface of the penis, which is designed by nature to be an internal organ like the vagina. Natural sex involves contact between two internal organs. [11]
In essence, medical male genital mutilation (MGM) is the pathologization and treatment of the "disease" of male sexuality. [12]

Circumcision not enough to stop HIV, experts warn experts

"As thousands of young men in Nyanza Province troop to health centres to be circumcised in hopes of fending off HIV, new studies show it might be too early to claim victory. Although circumcision has been touted as one of the ways to prevent HIV infection, recent findings show an increase in HIV infection in regions where most males are circumcised.

According to findings of the Kenya Aids Indicator Survey (Kais) released last week, North Eastern and Coast provinces, where 97 per cent of males are circumcised, registered an increase in HIV prevalence."

Circumcision health benefit virtually nil, study finds

“While it is the most common surgical procedure in the world, there is virtually no demonstrable health benefit derived from circumcision of either newborns or adults, a new study concludes.

The sole exception seems to be using circumcision to reduce the risk of transmission of HIV-AIDS in adult males in sub-Saharan Africa, though it is unlikely that benefit carries over to other parts of the world where rates of HIV-AIDS are much lower.

The research, published in Tuesday’s edition of the Annals of Family Medicine, shows that, despite claims, there is little evidence that circumcision can prevent sexually transmitted infections, urinary tract infections and penile cancer.

There are also risks to the surgery that, while rare, range from sexual dissatisfaction through to penile loss.”

Circumcising boys for religious reasons 'could breach Human Rights Act'

“Dr David Shaw, lecturer in ethics at Glasgow University, argues that circumcising boys for no medical reason is unethical.

Safety and Efficacy of Nontherapeutic Male Circumcision: A Systematic Review

Bottom line (emphasis added):

Patients who request circumcision in the belief that it bestows clinical benefits must be made aware of the lack of consensus and robust evidence, as well as the potential medical and psychosocial harms of the procedure. As the efficacy of prophylactic nontherapeutic male circumcision has not been comprehensively studied in neonates, it would be inappropriate to recommend widespread neonatal circumcision for this purpose.”

In other words - there's NO strong medical evidence to support cutting off part of a male's healthy genitalia and therefore the procedure is NOT recommended for adults OR infants. The risks outweigh any perceived benefit - risks such as medical and psychosocial harm, among numerous other issues (even death).

The only reason it's still being done is rooted more in cosmetics and cultural tradition - neither of which are sufficient reasons to harm an infant in this manner.

Circumcision, Ethics, and Medicine

“Like all professions, medicine has its own ethical code and principles of conduct. One rule of conduct is "First, do no harm." Removing a normal, healthy body part and causing unnecessary pain is doing harm. Some doctors who circumcise acknowledge the associated pain and then dismiss it by saying, "It only lasts for a minute," implying that it is acceptable to subject an infant to unnecessary pain as long as it is temporary. (In one study, the time required for the procedure ranged from six to forty minutes.(1)) However, there is strong evidence that the pain has lasting effects. Even if it did not, this careless attitude about inflicting pain violates the ethical principles of the medical profession. It also violates general moral principles to subject anyone, particularly a defenseless infant, to any unnecessary pain for any period of time. As recently reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, "Failure to provide adequate control of pain amounts to substandard and unethical medical practice."(2) Furthermore, circumcision without anesthesia is inconsistent with ethical guidelines that prohibit performing surgical procedures on laboratory animals without anesthesia.(3) Based on these standards and given that there is no effective and safe anesthetic that will eliminate circumcision pain, all circumcisions would be prohibited.

According to the Hippocratic oath, another important principle of medical practice is that the patient’s welfare shall be the doctor’s first consideration.(4) In the case of circumcision, doctors generally tend to ignore this rule, while parents falsely believe they are following it. One physician defended circumcision by saying that "within the community at large, at the present time, there is not a tremendous amount of support for saying to parents you shouldn’t do this." For this physician, regarding the issue of circumcision, community attitude seems to supersede the patient’s welfare. Isn’t it the medical profession’s responsibility to lead rather than follow regarding community health care standards?”

History of Circumcision

Royal Dutch Medical Association: Male Circumcision “Medically Unnecessary”

Royal Dutch Medical Association (KNMG) to discourage non-therapeutic circumcision of male minors

Utrecht, 27 May 2010 – The official standpoint of KNMG and other related medical/scientific organisations is that non-therapeutic circumcision of male minors is a violation of children’s rights to autonomy and physical integrity. KNMG is urging a strong policy of deterrence.

The reason for the adoption of an official standpoint regarding this matter is the increasing emphasis on the protection of children’s rights. Contrary to popular belief, circumcision can also cause complications – bleeding, infection, urethral stricture and panic attacks are particularly common. Full or partial penile amputations have also been reported as a consequence of complications.”

Does Amputation Harm Babies?

Of course it does. Amputation of any healthy tissue is not only traumatic, but completely unnecessary. Naturally it will cause harm - on more levels than the parents who decide to cut their child even realize.

Does Circumcision Decrease Sexual Sensitivity? [Yes!]

“The effects of routine infant circumcision on penile sensation and sexual function are significant, one reason foreskin restoration is becoming more common.

That circumcision would reduce sexual sensation makes sense biologically. Stripping the glans of its protective foreskin effectively turns it from an internal to an external organ. Over time the originally moist, soft mucosa becomes pale as the skin builds up thicker layers to protect the delicate surface from abrasion against clothing. While circumcision results in initial hypersensitivity of the glans, over time the keratinisation of its surface makes the glans less sensitive.

Removing the foreskin also, not surprisingly, means that the circumcised man can no longer enjoy sensations from the specialised nerves amputated during the procedure. Nor can the foreskin function as intended during sex, providing gliding and rolling sensations a circumcised man necessarily lacks.

As circumcision has become the norm in America, the sexual effects of circumcision have been downplayed, if not outright dismissed. Advocates of circumcision point to a number of studies in which circumcised men reported being happy with the procedure or feeling no less sensitive after circumcision.

However, these studies are methodologically questionable.”

Circumcisions kill 20 boys in South Africa

“Twenty South African boys have died following botched circumcisions in the Eastern Cape Province.

"The deaths occurred over the past 12 days, with nine of them occurring over the past 24 hours," said a provincial health spokesperson.

Some 60 boys have been rescued from 11 initiation schools which have since been closed.

Circumcision is seen as a rite of passage into manhood in some South African communities.”

Infant circumcision is unethical paper says

“A new paper by David Shaw in Clinical Ethics this month argues that non-indicated circumcision performed by a physician is unethical. The paper states that an ethical doctor will object to conducting a clinically unnecessary operation on a child who cannot consent simply because of the parent’s desires or religious beliefs.”

It’s time to protect boys as well as girls from the barbaric practice of circumcision

“Let the squeamish look away now: this blog post is about male and female circumcision, a subject that’s raising controversy again. Why is female circumcision abhorrent but male circumcision kosher?

I blame our cultural hypocrisy.”

Infant circumcision causes [more than] 100 deaths each year in US

“The study found that approximately 117 neonatal (first 28 days after birth) circumcision-related deaths occur annually in the United States, one out of every 77 male neonatal deaths. The study also identified reasons why accurate data on these deaths are not available, some of the obstacles to preventing these deaths, and some solutions to overcome them.

Previous studies estimated the death rate as low as two per year to as many as 230. The study collected data from hospital records and government sources to attempt to provide a more accurate magnitude of the problem.

To put this in perspective, about 44 neonatal boys die each year from suffocation, and 8 from auto accidents. About 115 neonatal boys die annually from SIDS, nearly the same as from circumcision.”

Clarification on why MGM is comparable to FGM

The following video was posted by the YouTube member freedom0f5peech, who has an excellent assortment of informational videos about the subject of genital mutilation. This particular video was a response to another YouTube member who, like many people, is clearly not aware of the similarities between and misconceptions about female genital mutilation (FGM) and male genital mutilation (MGM). Due to a politically correct mindset in various countries, some people express massive anger about cutting females but blatantly refuse to accept that what is routinely done to baby boys is just as wrong as what happens to baby girls in some countries.

*Warning – the video contains various profanities as well as some images of human genitalia.

The case against circumcision

“To be intact, as nature intended, is best. The vast majority of males who are given the choice value their wholeness and keep their foreskins, for the same reason they keep their other organs of perception. Parents in Europe and non-Muslim Asia never have forced their boys to be circumcised. It would no more occur to them to cut off part of their boys' penises than it would to cut off part of their ears. Respecting a child's right to keep his genitals intact is normal and natural. It is conservative in the best sense of the word.

A circumcised father who has mixed feelings about his intact newborn son may require gentle, compassionate psychological counseling to help him come to terms with his loss and to overcome his anxieties about normal male genitalia. In such cases, the mother should steadfastly protect her child, inviting her husband to share this protective role and helping him diffuse his negative feelings. Most parents want what is best for their baby. Wise parents listen to their hearts and trust their instinct to protect their baby from harm. The experience of the ages has shown that babies thrive best in a trusting atmosphere of love, gentleness, respect, acceptance, nurturing, and intimacy. Cutting off a baby's foreskin shatters this trust. Circumcision wounds and harms the baby and the person the baby will become. Parents who respect their son's wholeness are bequeathing to him his birthright-his body, perfect and beautiful in its entirety.”

Who’s looking after the boys?

The universal declaration of human rights state that every man, woman and child should have equal rights without discrimination (United Nations, 1948). These rights should have meaning within our everyday lives and aim to protect all people from injustice.”

Strawman Fallacy: FGM vs. MGM

Routine circumcision of normal male infants and boys

“Strictly speaking, it is not the opponents of routine male circumcision who need to make a case against the procedure, but its supporters who must prove its necessity: they need to explain why a natural part of the human body, and one common to all primates, is so dangerous that it must be amputated before a baby can talk, crawl or do anything much except scream.”

Foreskin or against it?

A humorous article written by a cut man. While very funny in places, it gets the point across by summarizing:

“In 100 years, I mused, will circumcision exist only in books that chronicle gruesome medical foibles? Will it be found in the chapter right after leeches?”

Pro/con chart

“A while back, I wrote an essay on the ethics of routine male circumcision. During my search for sources in writing this paper, I found very few pro-circumcision sources because so few doctors recommend the procedure today.

Despite that, many Americans are still very much for Routine Infant Circumcision. This is my page outlining both the pro and con arguments for the procedure, followed by a brief on the truth of the situation.”

The deepest cut

“[L]ately, more parents than ever are deciding to keep their newborn sons intact—especially on the West Coast. The reasons range from changing recommendations by medical authorities to the growing trend of parents not wanting to blindly follow social norms.”

Circumcision and the wisdom of NORM

“In a society that puts so much belief on freedom of choice and individual liberty, should not boys be left to make their own decision when they are old enough to understand the full implications of what a circumcision involves?”
